About

Primal rock duos wrapped up in the blues existed long before Jack Gillis met, married, and started a band with Meg White during the second half of the 1990. But no act had so savvily combined so many crucial elements—a high-design color palette, an air of mystery, and, most importantly, a mighty and unmistakable sound—as The White Stripes did. When the group recorded its debut album in early 1999, Gillis—a former drummer who’d rechristened himself Jack White—was still relatively new to the guitar. Meg, meanwhile, had been playing drums for less than 18 month. Yet the largely self-produced 17 songs on the band’s self-titled stunner move with remarkable aplomb toward one goal: to push the blues—kicking and screaming and messy and beautiful—into the 21st century. And The White Stripes did just that. From the start, Jack White was an incisive and magnetic guitar player, his snarling riff for opener “Jimmy the Exploder” as fetching as the circular slide line that anchors “Suzy Lee.” His writing seemed intuitive yet studied, as if stacks of Son House, Robert Johnson, and Led Zeppelin records were simply the spark for a mound of kindling awaiting its fate. Meg’s status as a new drummer allowed her to play with freedom and power, instantly disregarding the rules that some veteran teacher might have instilled. She is the enforcer for “Wasting My Time,” her cymbal and kick landing like body blow, as well as the groove machine for “Astro,” on which her simple pulse is as intoxicating as a bottle of illicit booze. There was nothing especially fancy about the way either Jack or Meg White played on their debut, but their instant chemistry was clear and compulsory. .
