About
On The Traveller, Senegalese singer Baaba Maal enlists Johan Hugo, of London Afropop group The Very Best, for a reflective blend of West African traditionalism and darkly futuristic electronic production. In "Fulani Rock," Maal's soaring voice is Auto-Tuned into an alien wail and set over mesmerising guitars, while "Gilli Men" deploys cavernous digital reverb. The musicians' fondness for dichotomy is clear as the album concludes: On "War," poet Lemn Sissay decries armed conflict over rumbling drums, while "Peace" uses the same words, but sweeter music, to cleverly invert Sissay's downbeat prognostication.
