Thirteen albums into his career, Womack proved he was as vital as ever with <i>The Poet</i>, a rousing collection of smoldering love ballads and impassioned synthesizer soul that demonstrated his emotional and stylistic mastery of modern R&B. "If You Think You're Lonely Now," featuring Womack's own understated lead guitar, was his first hit after years out of the limelight, and disco-inflected jams like "Lay Your Lovin’ On Me" and the thoughtful, playful "Where Do We Go from Here" swing with gentle insistence.
