Even when he laid it on thick, as on the strings-driven, post-disco torch song "Tryin' to Get Over You"—or, for that matter, the cover of <i>The Poet II</i>—Bobby Womack was a master of restrained R&B. Patti LaBelle's appearances here are potent, especially on the poetic "Through the Eyes of a Child," something of a spiritual sequel to "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Womack's hero, Sam Cooke. And amid Womack's classic soulman vocals, dig the synthesized funk of "Tell Me Why" and "Who's Foolin' Who."
