About

Andrew Lloyd Webber's sumptuously melodic "music of the night" kicks off with a gothic synthesizer flourish for the soundtrack to Joel Schumacher's 2004 film. Starring Gerard Butler in the title role and a teenaged Emmy Rossum as Christine, The Phantom is an old-fashioned musical at heart, with sweeping romantic balladry ("All I Ask of You") and a sophisticated comedy piece ("Prima Donna"). Webber's keen pop sensibility is in full effect during Minnie Driver's credits number, "Learn to Be Lonely."

The "Phantom of the Opera" is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart with additions from Richard Stilgoe.
It is the longest running musical in Broadway history. The musical opened in London's West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical. Michael Crawford won the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical.
Many cast recordings of the musical have been released, including double albums of the London, German and Japanese productions. Other English-language recordings include a Canadian cast album, the film soundtrack album and a 25th anniversary concert recording.
The original London cast album was released as a double album and a single-disc highlights album. No recordings were made by the original Broadway and Australian casts, so the London recording was issued in the American and Australian markets.
The single-disc highlights album of the London recording uses Michael Crawford's single version of "Music of the Night."
