About

The Parable of Arable Land is the first studio album by the Red Crayola (also known as Red Krayola) which features freely improvised pieces dubbed “Free Form Freak-Out” by a secondary auxiliary called “The Familiar Ugly” (who were invited into the studio to play on assorted items spanning from a chest of drawers and Coca-Cola bottles to industrial power tools and a revving Harley Davidson motorcycle) as well as notable instrumental cameos by label mate and 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson. The album’s title was coined by bassist Steve Cunningham. The album was considered psychedelic/avant-garde when it was released, but later assessments describe it as a forerunner to punk, industrial and noise rock. It was made with $600, and when released, it became an underground success, selling over 50,000 copies and even garnering the attention of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix just on word of mouth. Mayo Thompson called it "the beginnings of alternative rock" as the album came with no advertising, promotion or band photographs. Today it is considered a cult classic with Pitchfork critic Alex Linhardt dubbing it as "one of the most visionary album" of 1967 and appearing on lists such as NME's "Top 100 Greatest Albums You've Never Heard" and Spin Magazine's "Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s" whilst notable musicians of the likes of Madlib, MGMT, Anton Newcombe and Mark Stewart have all expressed admiration for it.
