#1 U.S. hit in 1967, recorded when Alex Chilton was 16 years old and still in high school in Memphis. 'The Letter' was recorded at when the band were still called The Devilles. Two of the performers on the song, Richard Malone (guitar), Russ Caccamisi (bass) had left the band by the time of its release. 'Happy Times' was recorded at the same studio at later date by a session band with the newly christened Box Tops only performing vocal duties.
