The Last Supper is the debut full-length album by Austrian blackened death metal band Belphegor, released in January 1995 through Lethal Record. This album marked the band's first major foray into the extreme metal scene and helped establish their signature sound: a brutal mix of death metal aggression and black metal atmosphere. At the time, Belphegor’s lineup consisted of Helmuth on guitars and vocal, Maxx on bass and vocal, Sigurd on lead guitar, and Chris on drum, with additional keyboards by Heiko Hanke to add an eerie, ritualistic layer. The album is infamous not just for its raw and relentless sound, but also for its provocative, graphic artwork. The original cover—featuring controversial religious imagery—was so intense that later pressings hid it under a slipcase. Thematically, The Last Supper plunges deep into blasphemy, anti-religion, death, and perversion, typical of Belphegor’s early aesthetic. Tracks like “Impalement Without Mercy”, “A Funeral Without a Cry”, and “D.I.E. (Drowned in Excrements)” reflect the band’s nihilistic worldview and obsession with death and defilement. The music blends tremolo-picked riff, guttural growl, blast beat, and occasional keyboards to create a dense, suffocating atmosphere. The album closes with “Kruzifixion”, a reworked track from the band’s earlier days when they were still known as Betrayer. In 1999, The Last Supper was reissued with six bonus tracks from early demos and EP, including material from Obscure and Deep. More recently, in 2022, it was remastered by longtime collaborator Andy Classen and released on vinyl through Nuclear Blast, often bundled with their second album, Blutsabbath. .
