For Sheryl Crow’s third offering, the Missouri native relaxes her grip on the meticulous songcraft that made her earlier albums ‘90s staples, swapping slick production for gutsy roots rock and high emotion. She’s fiery and nostalgic on the Stones-y “There Goes the Neighborhood” and unreleased Dylan cover “Mississippi”; bluesy and soulful on “It Don’t Hurt” and hit single “My Favorite Mistake”; and effortlessly powerful on “Anything but Down,” with its strutting, peacocking tempo and muscular chords.
