The Complete Matrix Tapes is a live box set by the New York City-based proto-punk band The Velvet Underground, consisting of a series of recordings of the Lou Reed-Sterling Morrison-Doug Yule-Maureen Tucker lineup of the band made in 1969, and released in 2015 after substantial remixing and remastering. The set has been praised both for the quality of its performances and for its sound fidelity. Various performances in this set were previously included on the live albums 1969: The Velvet Underground Live and The Quine Tape, but the sound quality here is superior to that on 1969 and vastly superior to that on The Quine Tape, which were mono audience recording. Some of the recordings in this set were also included on a deluxe re-release of the band's 1969 album The Velvet Underground, but this is the first time the unexpurgated recordings have been released. Several songs from this collection (such as "Over You" and "Sweet Bonnie Brown") have never been released as studio recording, and several of the ones that have (such as "New Age", "Lisa Says", and "I'm Waiting for the Man") here have significantly revised or expanded lyrics in some or all of their performance. Additionally, despite the inclusion of multiple versions of many songs in this collection, most of them vary widely in style and performance, as the Velvet Underground's live performances often contained a significant amount of improvisation, and the band were remarked never to play the same song the same way twice.
