About

“Would’ve said you’re beautiful but I’ve used that line before,” sings James Blunt on opener “Love Me Better.” That pledge to avoid recycling past glories is upheld throughout his fifth album. Ryan Tedder’s been drafted to help update and reinvigorate his sound, and succeeds best on the downtempo EDM of “Lose My Number” and the breezy, poolside rhythms of “Bartender.” It’s not a complete reinvention, though: “Make Me Better,” co-written with Ed Sheeran, is the kind of gently melodic love song Blunt’s always excelled at.
