About
Spinetta y los Socios del Desierto is the debut studio album by the Argentine band of the same name, comprised of Luis Alberto Spinetta (guitar and vocals), Daniel Wirtz (drums), and Marcelo Torres (bass). It is a double album recorded in 1995 at Spinetta's personal studio, La Diosa Salvaje, and released in 1997 after a lengthy dispute with record label. By the end of 1995, the band had already recorded their first album, a double album, at Spinetta's own La Diosa Salvaje studio, but the major record labels refused to release it, citing artistic reasons—they refused to release a double album and accept the cover art—and market reason. After almost a year of fruitless negotiation, Spinetta released a statement titled "The Album and Time," in which he harshly criticized the record labels for their lack of consideration for his career and the artistic value of his work, as well as certain print media outlets that had intervened in the conflict by disseminating false financial figure, which he described as "pseudopods of the power of certain record companie." After several years and battles with the record companie, Spinetta y los Socios del Desierto finally released their first album, a double album released by Sony Music, simply titled Spinetta y los Socios del Desierto, featuring the songs they had already performed live. It was recorded at La Diosa Salvaje studio. With exceptional artwork, this CD quickly reached the top of the charts and was considered the best album of the year. It was officially launched at the Hard Rock Café in Buenos Aire, where the band played a few songs and held a press conference. There, Spinetta recounted how much effort it had taken to get the album released. Many saw the album as "a victory for a musician over the kings of the record industry." The album consists of two discs with a total of 33 track. Recorded almost entirely live, Spinetta described the album as "an acoustic album of violent electricity, but acoustic nonethele." It is an expression of the personal and social passions and concerns that Spinetta experienced in the mid-1990, synthesized in the idea of "desert." It contains several songs in which he expresses his rejection of consumerism, frivolity, corruption, and environmental pollution, all of which intensified during that neoliberal decade, such as "Cheque," "Bosnia," "Nasty People," "Espejo en una sombra," and "La luz te fue." In "Cuenta en el sol," he asks how to change "this world of madmen and fascist," and in "Jardín de gente," he laments "the collage of human predation." It also includes several love song, influenced by his divorce and the beginning of his relationship. The album features songs with Carolina Peleritti, such as "Diana," "Cuentas de un collar," "Oh! Magnolia," "Mi sueño de hoy," "Jazmín," and "Collar." It also includes three tracks with lyrics by other authors: "Los duendes" and "Holanda," with lyrics by Roberto Mouro, and "2 de enero," with lyrics by tennis player Modesto "Tito" Vázquez. .
