The original 1975 Mental Notes album was only released in Australia and New Zealand and this album was released internationally a year later. To avoid confusion it was titled ‘Second Thoughts’ in Australia and New Zealand, and this title and artwork were carried over to the CD editions when the Split Enz catalog was released on CD.
This album is produced by Phil Manzanera and contains re-recorded versions of four songs from the original Australasian release of Mental Notes (‘Walking Down A Road’, ‘Titus’, ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, ‘Time For A Change), two further re-recordings of earlier singles (‘Matinee Idyll’ formerly titled ‘One Two Nine’, and ‘Late Last Night’), plus three other songs.
The artwork for the international version of Mental Notes is similar to the original, with two clear distinctions; guitarist Wally Wilkinson (top right) has been replaced in the revised image by Robert Gillies, and Phil Judd (third left) has been given a bald head.
