About
Alice Cooper’s musical theatrics blossomed on this 1972 song cycle about American youth. There’s plenty of glam-rock muscle wrapped in elaborate productions: The title track has the singer’s menacing roar surrounded by children chanting rhymes, and “Gutter Cat vs. The Jets” is a multi-part epic that mashes up carousel organ and clobbering drums with snippets of <i>West Side Story</i>. Teenage rebellion courses throughout, reaching an ingenious peak on “Alma Mater,” a psychedelic ballad cheekily equating graduation with prison release.

The original album cover (designed by Craig Braun) had the sleeve replicating a wooden school desk complete with etchings by members of the band. The desk even opens in the way to reveal the vinyl. Underneath, an image is provided of the other contents of the 'desk' including gum, marbles, crayons and, of course, the track listings and credits. The finishing touch was the legs on the base which could, if wanted, be opened up enabling the desk to stand up! The original vinyl record inside was wrapped in a pair of panties, though this was later discontinued as the paper panties were found to be flammable.
The album reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the Canadian RPM 100 Top Albums chart, holding the top position for four weeks.
