There has been confusion over the original release date for the first US pressings.
Evidence for December 1969: The Scepter 580 LP (and 8-track and cassette) was advertised as a new, ostensibly already-available release in the Dec. 20, 1969 issue of Billboard and the Dec. 27, 1969 issue of Cash Box, which also included a review of the album. Billboard did not publish an issue for the final week of December, but in the next issue, dated Jan. 6, 1970, which would have gone to press the previous weekend, the LP debuted at #191 on the Top LPs chart.
Evidence for January 1970: Several respected discographies list it as a January 1970 release. When mentioned as a new release in the Jan. 6th issue of Billboard, it was considered a new release "for January". However, this was also accompanied by an explanation that the listed records had actually come out over "the past few weeks" and yet were still nominally "January" catalog additions.
In any case, the bsnpubs website (opens in a new tab) mentions that the first pressings, which have matrix codes ending in A or B, have a muddy mix (or is it just a mastering difference?) which was replaced on later pressings (matrix ending in C and up).
