About
"Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" is the fifth studio album by Norwegian symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir. It was released in 2001 through Nuclear Blast Record. The album marked the first appearance of drummer Nick Barker, guitarist Galder, and bassist ICS Vortex in the band. It was also the first Dimmu Borgir album to incorporate live orchestral instrumentation in addition to keyboard. The recording was produced by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was the first of three consecutive Dimmu Borgir albums recorded there. The album's drum production made extensive use of triggered sample, resulting in a highly processed sound. According to Nick Barker, this approach was influenced by his work with Hellhammer on Mayhem's 2000 album "Grand Declaration of War". The bass drum sample used on the album was reportedly taken from the introduction of Pantera's song "5 Minutes Alone" from the 1994 album "Far Beyond Driven". The tom drum sound used on the album was later reused on "Reaping the World Winds", the debut album by Dimension F3H, which was also mixed by Fredrik Nordström. A remixed and remastered edition of "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia", again handled by Fredrik Nordström, was released on 28 October 2022. The updated version featured less prominent drum triggering and reduced emphasis on samples and keyboard. .
