About
Following the release of Social Distortion’s first album in 1983, group leader Mike Ness fell into a life of drug addiction and petty crime and lost his band in the process. Many observers assumed Social Distortion was gone for good, but after Ness quit drugs in 1985 he reconstituted the group and eventually reintroduced it to the world with 1988’s Prison Bound. Even as a young punk, Ness had seemed wise beyond his years. With some serious life experience under his belt, Prison Bound felt like his first grown-up statement. Ness didn’t reformat the band's sound; what he did was supplant the outdated punk codes that had previously ruled his life with a new set of codes taken from '50s rock 'n' roll and country music. The simplicity and directness of “It’s the Law,” “Like an Outlaw (For You),” “Backstreet Girl," and “On My Nerves” show a kinship not only with the protean rock music of the '50s but with other songwriters who'd drawn from that well, especially Bruce Springsteen. The title track is magnificent: a poignant cowboy song transformed into a biker’s anthem.

This grouping gathers together all versions of the "Prison Bound" album, originally released in 1988 on vinyl/tape/CD, as well as subsequent repressings and bootleg versions.
In 1995, the back catalogue was officially on vinyl/tape/CD in remastered form (via Time Bomb Recordings, who handles all of the band's non-Epic Records recordings) while Epitaph Europe also re-issued the remastered version in 2010.
"Prison Bound" is the second studio album by Social Distortion, was released in 1988. This is the first album with bass guitarist John Maurer and drummer Christopher Reece. It expands upon the punk sound of the band's highly regarded but commercially unsuccessful first album "Mommy's Little Monster" (1983) by adding elements of Johnny Cash style country and The Rolling Stones style rock and roll.
Today, "Prison Bound" is looked upon as a turning point for Social Distortion, paving the way for the commercial success they achieved on their next album, Social Distortion, which was released two years later.
After this album was released, Social Distortion left Restless / Enigma Records in 1989 and moved to Epic Records for their self-titled album.
The first track, "It's the Law", was originally titled "Justice for All", which has the same lyrics. "Justice for All" originally appeared on a Posh Boy sampler The Future Looks Bright (US 1981) (opens in a new tab) in 1981 and later appeared on the 1995 compilation album "Mainliner": Wreckage from the Past. The fifth track, "Prison Bound", was only released as a single on KROQ-FM. The album contains a cover version of "Backstreet Girl" originally recorded by the Rolling Stones. The album's title track contains a reference to Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line". The band went on to cover Cash's "Ring of Fire" on their next album.
