About

Places for Breathing is the debut studio album by American post-grunge band Revi, released on May 20, 2003 through Epic Record. The record was produced by Don Gilmore, known for his work with Linkin Park and Pearl Jam, and mixed by Andy Wallace. Recording sessions took place in 2002 and 2003, during which the band developed a sound blending elements of alternative rock, grunge, and post-grunge, with polished production aimed at mainstream rock audience. The album runs for 42 minutes and 17 seconds and consists of eleven track, including the singles “Caught in the Rain” and “Seven.” “Caught in the Rain” gained significant exposure after appearing on the soundtrack for the Marvel film Daredevil (2003), which helped introduce the band to a wide audience prior to the album’s release. The single charted on multiple Billboard chart, reaching number 8 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 20 on the Modern Rock Track. “Seven,” the second single, also received airplay on modern rock stations and MTV2. Musically, Places for Breathing carried the hallmarks of early 2000s post-grunge, including dynamic loud/soft song structure, driving guitar riff, and emotionally charged vocals from frontman Justin Holman. Guitarist Robert Davis and bassist Bob Thiemann provided the band’s heavy yet melodic foundation, while drummer Nathaniel Cox completed the lineup. The band’s sound drew comparisons to acts such as Chevelle, Fuel, and Staind, placing Revis firmly within the era’s alternative metal and post-grunge scene. The album cover, designed under Epic’s art direction, features abstract, atmospheric imagery that complemented the band’s brooding aesthetic. Promotion included touring with bands such as Evanescence, Pearl Jam, and Nickelback, as well as performances on televised music program. Despite these effort, the album only reached number 115 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, though it maintained a steady presence on rock radio throughout 2003. An interesting point in the album’s history is its connection to the Daredevil soundtrack. The inclusion of “Caught in the Rain” provided Revis with immediate visibility at a time when soundtrack placements were an important promotional tool for emerging rock band. The single’s success on rock radio sustained momentum for the band’s debut and remains their most recognized song. Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers praising the band’s professionalism and production quality while others noted a lack of distinction in a crowded post-grunge field. Neverthele, Places for Breathing has since developed a reputation among fans as a strong example of early 2000s radio rock and post-grunge. The album represents the band’s only major release during their initial run, as Revis disbanded shortly after its release cycle in 2005. A second album, tentatively titled Do We Have to Beg?, was recorded years later during a brief reunion but was never officially released beyond promotional leak. This left Places for Breathing as the band’s sole official studio album, giving it a unique place in post-grunge history as both a debut and a swan song. .
