Originally a 17-song demo cassette recorded in 1987 at Boston's Fort Apache studios. This demo came to be known as 'The Purple Tape'. The cassette attracted the attention of the label 4AD, which issued eight of the demos (slightly remixed) as the band's debut, 'Come On Pilgrim'. The other tracks appeared on later albums & singles in re-recorded form. Only 'Rock A My Soul' had remained officially unreleased.
