About
Australia’s sweetheart overhauled her image, both visually and musically, on her 1981 album. The girl next door dons sweatband and leotard, while embracing synth-based pop. The title track and “Make a Move on Me” meld the new sound and attitude, while Newton-John pushes her vocals into a keening falsetto against pumping keyboards and ticking drum machines. On deeper cuts like the sparkling “Silvery Rain” and lush “The Promise (The Dolphin Song),” she sings passionately about environmental concerns and animal rights, which she continues to champion.
