About

Pescado Rabioso 2, or simply Pescado 2, is the second studio album by Argentine rock band Pescado Rabioso. Released in 1973 by Microfón. In November 1972, recording began at Phonalex Studios on the double album Pescado 2, which was completed by the end of January 1973. The band had changed since the album Desatormentándono, recorded just a few months earlier. Bocón Frascino had left, and David Lebón had taken his place. This work brings a new sound to Latin American rock, while Spinetta’s lyrics openly embrace the poetic-philosophical content that would become characteristic of his work, in this case influenced mainly by Arthur Rimbaud. The main cover of Pescado 2 is a black-and-white drawing of a “rabid fish,” shaped like an “S”-shaped eel, with its mouth and eyes wide open, from whose tail emerge three eighth notes (one single and two joined). In the lower right corner are several drawings of trees placed horizontally, described in the booklet as “Argentine peteribíe.” It was created by Gustavo Spinetta, Luis Alberto’s brother, and producer Jorge Álvarez, and became one of the icons of Pescado Rabioso. The same drawing appears on the album label. The inside back cover of the album features a photo of the band members lying in a park, rendered in yellow tone. The photo was taken by Viviana Rossi. The inner sleeve of the second disc features four ochre-toned paintings by Luis Alberto Spinetta, depicting complex fish-shaped figures with cartoon-like feature. In one of them, a “rabid fish” appears in the toilet. In another, a shark and a mermaid can be seen among several other sinister fish-shaped figure. In a third painting, there is a figure holding a sign that reads “fresh fish,” while another figure say, “I have to quit drinking wine.” Finally, in the last of the painting, several strange fish can be seen, along with a small inscription that reads “clear waters of Olympus” and a fish with a speech bubble containing a question mark. The album came with a 52-page booklet, handwritten and filled with drawings and some photos of the musicians as children, where the lyrics were transcribed and each song was explained. One of the pages was left blank so that each person could “participate in this space however you like.” The book explained that both albums are intimately connected and that when switching from one album to the other, one had to focus one’s gaze on an imaginary point located in the center of the book. The booklet opens with a prose poem by Rimbaud, “Bridge,” included in his work *Illuminations*, one of the direct precursors of Surrealism. The second part of the booklet, corresponding to Disc 2, opens with a poem by Pescado Rabioso titled “Estado Matinal,” which is dedicated to Rimbaud. .
