About
Penny Sparkle is an even more tantalizingly atmospheric album than 2007’s 23, thanks in part to the textural touch of Fever Ray coproducers Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid. “My Plants Are Dead” resurrects Cocteau Twins’ trademark swirled guitars and tambourines, and “Love or Prison” sends Kazu Makino’s hushed voice sailing atop hesitant synths and clanging electronic drums. The closer, “Spain,” channels Sade, of all things, and it works wonderfully, making for a gorgeous and elegant end to a beautifully nuanced LP.
