Outward Bound, recorded on 1 April 1960, is Eric Dolphy's first date as a leader, containing six tracks. A seventh piece from the same session, "April Fool", and alt. takes of "GW" and "254"were first added on the 2006 RVG Remasters series. See: Outward Bound (US 2006) (opens in a new tab) (Prestige PRCD-30083-2).
The first issues of the album on the label New Jazz showed a cover painting by a friend of Dolphy's, Richard Jennings, who signed his work "The Prophet" (Prophet). The first reissues (on Prestige) date from 1964 and the new cover then showed a photograph of Dolphy.
