About
"Nina" is a tribute album comprising of Nina Simone cover songs in a free jazz style. The idea behind the album came about after a conversation Jamie Stewart had with Michael Gira, of Swan, over their shared love for Simone, which left him with a desire to honor her legacy and challenge himself. Recorded in NYC, the album features collaborations with Ches Smith, Mary Halverson, Tim Barne, Tony Malaby, and Andrea Parkin, as well as musicians with backgrounds in jazz and avant-garde music, who have variously collaborated with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Nels Cline, Charlie Haden, Anthony Braxton, and more. The instrumentation includes guitar, drum, accordion, electronic, piano, synth, and an array of saxophone, with arrangements by longtime Xiu Xiu collaborator Ches Smith. .
