About
There’s an essential sweetness in Amanda Shires’ voice—birdlike, it quavers on high notes, affects a vibrato on descending runs, then tapers to a half-spoken whisper. That quality adds conversational warmth to her robust Americana tunes, showcasing the striking imagery and distinctive perspective in her lyrics. Written while Shires was carrying her first child with husband/collaborator Jason Isbell, My Piece of Land vibrates with anticipation and fluctuating emotions, from the mournful anxiety of “Slippin’” to “Nursery Rhyme,” a tender litany of a lullaby.
