About
Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1 is a studio album by the British experimental music group Coil, released in September 1999. This album marks a significant shift in the band's musical direction, embracing what they termed "moon musick"—a departure from their earlier "solar" theme. Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1 represents Coil's exploration into "moon musick," characterized by ambient, glitch, minimalism, and kosmische musik influence. This thematic shift signified their transition from "solar" to "moon" music, embracing elements they previously avoided, such as the feminine, the tidal, and the cyclical. Jhonn Balance provided insights into the meanings of the songs in liner notes published on Coil's website, discussing themes ranging from MDMA experiences to ancestor worship. The album's development coincided with Coil's move into a new studio equipped with instruments like the Optigan and vintage drum machine, alongside software like Pro Tool. Drew McDowall contributed granular synthesis element, while Thighpaulsandra's work is prominent on tracks like "Red Birds Will Fly Out of the East and Destroy Paris in a Night." The album features drone-like organ chord, vocoded vocal, static pop, and natural environmental sound, creating a rich, immersive soundscape. Personnel Jhonn Balance Peter Christopherson Thighpaulsandra .
