This album marks a significant shift in the band's musical direction, embracing what they termed "moon musick"—a departure from their earlier "solar" themes. Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1 represents Coil's exploration into "moon musick," characterized by ambient, glitch, minimalism, and kosmische musik influences. This thematic shift signified their transition from "solar" to "moon" music, embracing elements they previously avoided, such as the feminine, the tidal, and the cyclical. Jhonn Balance provided insights into the meanings of the songs in liner notes published on Coil's website, discussing themes ranging from MDMA experiences to ancestor worship. The album's development coincided with Coil's move into a new studio equipped with instruments like the Optigan and vintage drum machines, alongside software like Pro Tools.
