About
Nilüfer Yanya goes through feelings of self-doubt and apprehension on her full-length debut. But she refuses to wallow in misery. The London-based BBC Sound of 2018 nominee shakes those thoughts off with an eclectic, free-flowing assortment of guitar-driven songs. Yanya centers the album around an imaginary self-care business called WWAY Health—short for We Worry About Your Health—assuming the role of a hotline operator over a series of darkly comedic interludes. Rather than suppress her feelings, Yanya draws out her torment related to an unreliable partner with oftentimes surreal imagery: “I bet your brain cells won’t last/I bet they cling to the trash,” she jests over a slinky sophisti-pop groove on “Melt.” Her conflicted thoughts turn chilling on the Jam & Lewis-inspired throwback “Tears”: “If it’s not you/I’ll be lyin’ in a pool of someone else’s blood.” The aptly titled “Paradise” is a rare moment of respite—featuring Yanya's soft timbre—where she manages to control her untamed urges with a comforting sense of ease.
