About
Madre En Años Luz, from 1984, is the fourth and final studio album by the Argentine rock band Spinetta Jade. It was the first Argentine album recorded with a digital master. On this album, Spinetta Jade underwent several changes compared to the previous record: Juan Carlos "Mono" Fontana replaced Leo Sujatovich on keyboards, and guitarist Lito Epumer joined, making them a quintet once again. Guest musicians included Uruguayan Osvaldo Fattoruso (percussion on "Mula alma" and timbales on "Enero del último día") and Pedro Aznar (programming on "Ludmila" and "Diganlé"). The album is unique in that it features no drums—except for the cymbals on the track "Diganlé"—since Spinetta himself programmed the electronic drum sequences. He is credited as if he were a member of the band: "Señor Tempo DMX: DX Digital Drums." This practice would become widespread in that decade, but at this time it was completely unusual. First and foremost, it is an album of contrasts: it fully embraces technology with drum programming and the use of a MIDI guitar-synthesizer, and the sound abandons the nuances of jazz to veer drastically towards pop; and yet, it is one of Spinetta's works that most strongly maintains a focus on the human being, his relationship with the surrounding environment, the concern for the future and the safeguarding of identity.
