About
In 1993 Big Chief released Mack Avenue Skullgame, an "original soundtrack" for a non-existent blaxploitation film set in Detroit's Cass Corridor. The album was the band's first release after signing with Sub Pop. Thornetta Davis joins the group as a featured vocalist (singing the part of Sonica the hooker). Fully conceived with a plot, themes, and incidental music, Mack Avenue was dedicated to legendary Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel, who died the year before. The album is funky and soulful, but very hard rocking. It sounds like Curtis Mayfield breaking up a street brawl between the Stooges and the Chambers Brothers... or maybe the MC5 channeling Sly and the Family Stone.
