About
By her second solo album, 2020’s Punisher, Phoebe Bridgers had established her own distinct sound and worldview—self-aware and specific, wryly funny, slightly morbid, keenly attuned to all things apocalyptic. The California native had broken through in 2017 with Stranger in the Alps and its bittersweet banger “Motion Sickne.” But with Punisher, Bridgers entered the running for the voice of her generation (or at least a voice of a generation), imprinting the pop landscape with her mix of wit and patho. The six-year stretch between that album and its long-awaited follow-up might suggest that Bridgers made like the ghost on the Strangers album cover and disappeared, spooked by the windfall of acclaim. In fact, the serial collaborator kept impressively busy: releasing a dystopian concept album with Conor Oberst as Better Oblivion Community Center; recording with SZA, Taylor Swift, and Paul McCartney; clinching three Grammys with her indie supergroup, boygeniu, alongside Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. But if the strict “no phones” policy at Bridgers’ 2026 pop-up shows is any indication, life as an era-defining musician has come at a price. On her third album, Lost Weekend, Bridgers pulls back the curtain to reveal what’s been behind the scenes in her own elliptically intimate way. With her typically double-tracked vocals obscured by vocoder, “The Outside” cycles through vignettes from her recent past—crowd-surfing at a festival, punching a wall, crying at her father’s funeral, dissociating throughout. Experimental sound design enhances feelings of grief and confusion, or drowns folksy instrumentation (acoustic guitar, mandolin, violin) in swirling synths or washes of feedback. Joining the roster of longtime collaborators (Ethan Gruska, Tony Berg, Christian Lee Hutson, Marshall Vore) are Jack Antonoff, Maya Hawke, and Bridgers’ partner Bo Burnham. But the sensibility is Bridgers’ own, as are the storie, which mainly revolve around three men—her late father, an ex-fiancé, and a new love known here as Bobby. .
