About
After the sheets-of-sound style of Giant Steps, Coltrane changed direction in 1961. By drafting multi-woodwind innovator Eric Dolphy into his working group, Trane brought a touch of the avant-garde. Dolphy’s bass clarinet solos included wide leaps between notes and harsh, overblown textures that spurred Coltrane on. His partnership with Dolphy produced only one track on the original set of recordings, but the complete master tracks, chosen by Coltrane himself, give a more complete picture of this historic residency.
