Recorded in Miami with a troupe of top-notch Southern players—including Delaney & Bonnie, Bobby Whitlock, and Duane Allman—<i>Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs</i> is a convivial celebration stoked by roiling urges. Guitar fireworks are seamlessly woven into the fibers of “I Looked Away” and “Bell Bottom Blues,” but the album is just as powerful on the hushed hotel room jam “I Am Yours.” Clapton’s inner demons surface on the towering title track, a thunderstorm of lust and anxiety funneled by his and Allman’s dueling guitars.

It is widely known, despite its omission on the release, that Rita Coolidge wrote the instrumental coda to the song "Layla" (she was with her then-boyfriend Jim Gordon). In her autobiography, she states she still has never been credited nor paid for this wonderful piano arrangement that she composed.
