KooKoo, Debbie Harry of Blondie's debut solo album, was released on July 27, 1981 via Chrysalis Records. Its singles were "Backfired" and "The Jam Was Moving". According to Harry in her memoir "Face It", the album was intended to be "...an album that synthesized black and white music, not just a rock band covering a black song or writing a song that referenced black music but a true collaboration between a black act and a white act". She worked with Blondie's guitarist Chris Stein and producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards from the band Chic to write the songs on the album. Stein and Harry wrote 4 songs together, Rodgers and Edwards wrote 4 songs together and all 4 of them wrote 2 songs together. The album cover was designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger. KooKoo was an early example of funk, rock, new wave and dance fusion, which was later seen on albums such as David Bowie's Let's Dance and Duran Duran's Notorious. The album received some commercial success, reaching number 25 on the US Billboard 200 chart and number 6 on UK charts. On May 5, 2023, a deluxe edition of the album was released. It included an extended version of the track "Inner City Spillover" as well as both extended versions and remixes of the singles "Backfired" and "The Jam Was Moving".
