About
Few burned as bright as Detroit proto-punk legends MC5. Kick Out the Jams was intended as merely a document of the band’s live show, but it stands as a flashpoint for punk, garage, and the visceral power of politically charged rock. Witness the wild dueling guitar solos of Wayne Kramer and Fred “Sonic” Smith on “Rocket Reducer No. 62,” and frontman Rob Tyner’s infamously foul-mouthed introduction to the title track. In capturing a moment, this album defines a movement.

Debut album recorded live at the in Detroit, Michigan on October 30th and 31st, 1968.
Edited and unedited versions were released simultaneously. The unedited version features the opening line "Kick out the jams, motherfuckers!" on track A2, but an edited version was made with "Kick out the jams, brothers and sisters", instead, for promotional use and more cautious retailers. Production stampers of the edited retail version exist with date-codes as early as February 1969.
The original sleeve has liner notes by John Sinclair inside the gatefold that also included the word "motherfucker". These were replaced by sleeves with the liner notes removed.
Earliest pressings of both versions have tan or gold Elektra labels, but through much of 1969 Elektra was transitioning from its tan or gold labels to a similar "big E' design with a red background, and multiple combinations exist of censored and uncensored disks with tan or red labels or red labels with a 1855 Broadway address in the rim-text.
Censored and uncensored sleeves can occur with multiple disk and label variants, as well. (It is also probable that some combinations result from inadvertent mixing and matching over the years.)
