About
The Bonzo Dog Band didn't make much of an impact in the USA but like its theatrical contemporaries, Monty Python, they were every bit as entertaining! KEYNSHAM is memorable due to the fact there really is no bad track, no clinkers on this album. Released in 1969 and re-issued on CD in 2007, this is a keeper for any vintage British art-rock band fan...and the rest of us who simply like a good laugh. First, the listener has to be a fan of British humor. Next, the listener must not be offended by Frank Zappa-like arrangements and irreverence. They don't cross the "taste" line on KEYNSHAM, but they weave it musically and lyrically to its maximum tolerance. Wikipedia reveals this much about the mythical locale in England: "It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Cainesham, meaning St Keyne's home. It is believed that Saint Keyne lived in the 5th century. Her father was named as Brychan. From 1974, Keynsham was administered as part of the shortlived county of Avon until 1996 and now resides in the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset which forms part of the ceremonial county of Somerset." No wonder the music and lyrics are so delicious! From "You Done My Brain In": "Don't kiss me with your silver lip Don't kiss me with your eye For God's sake, gimme a break Let me crawl away and die!" How about "Busted": "I'm filthy, I'm hungry I'm fed up to the teeth I'm very revolutionary I haven't washed in weeks You've seen me dancing topless And kipping on the beach I'm so bloody normal Yet I'm one of nature's freaks" And, "Joke Shop Man": "The Joke Shop Man has lots of gags Like plastic ears, exploding fags A million laughs to give your friends a treat hohohohohehehehoho!" And, of course, KEYNSHAM: "Lipstickgleam Hexachloraphene Cling cling the ring Clang clang she sang It's tragic magic There are no coincidences But sometimes the pattern is more obvious" The music is solid. In that Zappa way but you can tell this is not some thrown-together contrivance but musicians, writers and performers who had one goal in mind: entertain the audience. KEYNSHAM achieves the goal!.
