About

Linking up after their previous bands puttered out, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince created instant—and lasting—friction as London duo The Kills. Their 2003 debut is a blues-soured, distortion-scoured celebration of primitive punk and gnarled garage rock. Mosshart’s growling put-downs thrive among gritty guitar riffs and no-frills drum machine, and she conveys seething release in fist-pumping rallying cries like “You got it/I want it” on “Cat Claw.” Yet the quieter moments cut just as deep, as on the creaky dirge/duet “Kissy Kissy.”
