Sound DNA
- Jazz
Most releases of this master release have only Sidney Bechet and Muggsy Spanier mentions.
It's misleading because there are indeed 2 distincts bands:
1) The Bechet / Spanier Big Four with Carmen Mastren and Wellman Braud for Sweet Lorraine, Lazy River, China Boy, Four Of Five Times, That's A-Plenty, Squeeze Me, Sweet Sue Just You (and also If I Could Be With You only on the Allegro versions)
2) Rex Stewart's Big Seven with Barney Bigard, Lawrence Brown, Billy Kyle, Brick Fleagle and Dave Tough for Cherry and Diga Diga Do.
The Bechet-Spanier Big Four session took place in New York, on March 28 and April 6, 1940 and the Rex Stewart session also in New York on July 23, 1940.
And those sessions were originally issued on different shellac releases, HRS 2000 / 2001 (opens in a new tab), HRS 2002 (opens in a new tab) and HRS 2003 (opens in a new tab) for the Bechet-Spanier sessions, and HRS 2004 (opens in a new tab) for the Rex Stewart session.
