When Martha Wash and Izora Armstead recorded “It’s Raining Men” with producer/co-writer Paul Jabara, the session was funded by, who were contracted. Columbia had little interest in issuing the track, so in order to strongarm the label into a release, Jabara and Wash/Armstead’s attorney cut fifty or so acetates and distributed them to club DJs, who at the time reported plays to Billboard. The song’s club success eventually forced Columbia’s hand, leading to The Weather Girls’ signing and “It’s Raining Men”’s eventual #1 spot on the US Dance Club charts.
