About
Kevin Barnes’ funhouse world is as wildly colored as ever on Innocence Reaches, with a crucial difference—electronic influences have taken hold in a big way. The album opens with “let’s relate”—a stomping electroclash flashback that's all buzzing synths and processed vocals—while “my fair lady” balances glam strut with slinky disco and “trashed exes” has stuttering trap beats. Fortunately, of Montreal haven’t forgotten their roots; “gratuitous abysses” is garage rock at its finest, wrapping high-kicking fuzz-box delirium in heady falsetto harmonies.
