"In Sorte Diaboli" (Latin for "In league with the devil") is the seventh studio album by Norwegian symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir, released in 2007. It is the band's first concept album. A promotional website for the album was created by Nuclear Blast, featuring a new promotional photograph and an audio sample. It was the last Dimmu Borgir album to feature ICS Vortex, Hellhammer, and Musti. The album is set in medieval Europe and follows the story of a priest's assistant who begins to question his Christian faith and ultimately assumes the role of the Antichrist. According to guitarist Silenoz, the character experiences an awakening and discovers abilities and beliefs that lead him toward darker influence. The phrase "In Sorte Diaboli" appears repeatedly in the song "The Chosen Legacy" and also near the end of "The Sinister Awakening". The conclusion presented in the album booklet suggests that the story remains unfinished. The band's following album, "Abrahadabra", was influenced by Aleister Crowley's Thelema text "The Book of the Law". "In Sorte Diaboli" received generally positive reviews from music critic. AllMusic praised the album's music, production, and sound effect, while criticizing its concept and lyric. About.com described the songs as orchestral and melodic while retaining elements of heaviness and darkne. IGN named it the top metal album of 2007. The album cover was later included in LA Weekly's list "The 25 Creepiest Heavy Metal Album Covers", where it ranked 9th out of 25. .
