The song is based on the bassline from "Under Pressure (opens in a new tab)" by Queen and David Bowie, who originally did not receive credits or royalties for the sample. In a 1990 interview, Vanilla Ice said that the two melodies were slightly different because he had added an additional note, an anacrusis ("pickup") between odd-numbered and subsequent even-numbered iterations of the "Under Pressure" sample. But In later interviews, he admitted that he had sampled the song and that his earlier statement was a joke. He later granted Queen and Bowie songwriting credits.
The song is the first Hip Hop track to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
