About
Angus Stone reinvented his solo output with this psychedelic slow burn. After releasing three albums with his sister Julia—and scoring a global hit with 2010’s “Big Jet Plane”—Angus Stone decided to reinvent his solo output. Adopting the moniker DOPE LEMON, the Sydney native assembled a seasoned band: multi-instrumentalist Rohin Brown (The Walking Who), bassist Rob Calder (Passenger), keyboardist Elliot Hammond (The Delta Riggs), and drummer Matt Johnson, who played on Jeff Buckley’s Grace. Recording mostly in Stone’s farm studio, the ensemble locked into mellow, daydreamy jams that hew closer to Kurt Vile than to the sunny folk pop of his sibling duo. The opening “Marinade” cruises along with murmured spoken word and layered guitar twang, while the droning “Fuck Things Up” adds tinny drum machine and “Won’t Let You Go” coaxes wavering falsetto out of Stone. Many of these songs lock into an entrancing psychedelic flow, with the title track even graduating to a proper raga thanks to sitar, bell, and hand drum. .
