About
A gloriously ragged document of a 1987 show in Chicago, Hold That Tiger is a vivid testament to the power and chaos of Sonic Youth live. Thurston Moore’s sardonic between-song banter contrasts with the ferocity of the band’s performances, with the nightmarish “White Cross” and the burly “Death Valley ’69” signaling their transition from no-wave guitar abusers to arty garage-punk demolition crew. They close the set with a thrilling trio of Ramones covers, a nod to an earlier era of New York noise.

In order to fit the entire performance onto a single LP the recording was slightly sped up to reduce runtime, as well as being mastered at lower volume to maintain the integrity of the groove walls. The speed was not corrected for the subsequent CD reissues, with the 2020 bandcamp download being the first version to play at the correct speed. In 2025, a speed-corrected reissue was released and spread over 2 LPs.
