About
Here I Come, from 1985, helped create a template for the reggae-tinged R&B that would follow decades later. Barrington Levy’s malleable vocals on songs like “Moonlight Lover” suggest he’s the link between Marvin Gaye and Usher, while the pop-dancehall rap of “Do the Dance” and the club smash “Under Mi Sensi” are downright irresistible. The late-night horns on “The Vibes Is Right” and the dizzying synths on “Don’t Run Away” take cues from dancehall, soul, and pop without losing their Jamaican identity.
