About
A mere three years after their debut, Sly and co. had amassed enough chart-toppers to warrant a <i>Greatest Hits</i> compilation, anthems in which the world's original mixed-race, mixed-gender band emphasized unity, empowerment, and mutual respect. The songs—"You Can Make It If You Try," "Everyday People," "I Want to Take You Higher"—are the very foundation of funk and have been sampled endlessly. These were the cherries of the band's celebratory early era, before the end of the '60s turned Sly toward darker themes.
