About

Graduation is the third studio album by American rapper Kanye West, released on September 11th, 2007, by Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records. The album marked a turning point in West's career, as he moved away from the soul-sample-heavy production of his earlier work and embraced a more electronic, stadium-ready sound inspired by house music, indie rock, and the aesthetics of arena tours. Recording sessions for Graduation took place between 2005 and 2007 at various studios in New York City and Los Angeles. West took full control over the production direction, crafting a more futuristic, synth-heavy sound, while also collaborating with producers such as DJ Toomp, Mike Dean, and Nottz. The album also includes contributions from Dwele, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Mos Def, DJ Premier, and Chris Martin of Coldplay. Lyrically, the album explores themes of fame, success, insecurity, competition, and self-empowerment. West delivers introspective reflections on the downsides of celebrity life and the media spotlight while also providing uplifting anthems that celebrate personal achievement. The album also concludes the college-themed trilogy started with The College Dropout (2004) and Late Registration (2005). West originally intended to follow Graduation with an album titled Good Ass Job, but that project was ultimately shelved, making the trilogy unofficially complete. The visual direction of Graduation was heavily influenced by Japanese pop art and anime, with iconic cover and interior artwork created by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The album's vibrant visuals complemented its futuristic sound and contributed to its cultural impact. A highly publicized sales battle between Graduation and Curtis by 50 Cent occurred on the day of release. West and 50 Cent went head-to-head in a marketing showdown that captivated the music industry. Graduation outsold Curtis in the first week—957,000 to 691,000 copies—marking a symbolic shift away from the dominance of gangsta rap toward more genre-blending and experimental hip-hop. The event is often seen as a turning point in mainstream hip-hop, opening the door for more diverse and introspective artists to gain widespread success. The album produced five singles: "Stronger" – a chart-topping global hit built around a sample from Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", which became one of West’s most iconic tracks. "Good Life" (featuring T-Pain) – an upbeat celebration of success and luxury. "Can't Tell Me Nothing" – a darker, more introspective anthem that became a fan favorite. "Flashing Lights" – a moody, synth-laced track that reflects on fame and vanity. "Homecoming" (featuring Chris Martin) – a reflective song about returning to his hometown of Chicago. Graduation debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling over 957,000 copies in its first week. It was certified quintuple platinum by the RIAA and has sold over 5 million copies in the United States alone. Critics praised the album for its innovative production, focused songwriting, and cultural relevance. It earned West his third Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and another nomination for Album of the Year. Publications such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, and USA Today included it among the best albums of 2007. It was later featured on several decade-end lists and included in both Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and NME’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
