By the time he released <i>Get on the Good Foot</i> in 1972, Brown had seen his influence begin to wane after a decade's worth of blistering work. <i>Good Foot</i> finds him developing great synergy with his new—and perhaps greatest—backing band, the J.B.’s, recreating “Cold Sweat” and “Ain’t It a Groove” for his new label, Polydor Records. Songs like “Nothing Beats a Try Like a Fail” and “Lost Someone” venture into deeper, more meditative strains of gospel and R&B, and even if they don’t offer the same transformative power of his historic 1960s run, it offers a tantalizing glimpse into Brown’s next chapter.
