About
Following up 2015's solid Aspirations EP and a featured track on Gilles Peterson's 2018 survey of modern club jazz We Out Here, London tuba player Theon Cross returns with something considerably more in-your-face on his full-length debut, Fyah. It’s deeply beat-oriented, with heavy, almost blown-speaker-type grooves and agitated looping riffs, the kind of huge sound one wouldn’t expect from such a pared-down trio (tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Moses Boyd, Cross’ partners from Aspirations, return here). Similar in a way to his work with Shabaka Hutchings in Sons of Kemet, Cross retains in his own music a relentless funk intensity—“CIYA” being an exception, a lilting theme movingly harmonized by tenor saxophonist Wayne Francis, a.k.a. Ahnansé, and trombonist Nathaniel Cross (Theon's brother), with head-turning, Lionel Loueke-influenced guitar from Artie Zaitz. Yet amid the overall density of the sound, Cross finds room for subtle expression as an improvising soloist, notably on “Letting Go.”
