About
With injections of ’60s girl-group panache and trippy funk, En Vogue’s second album recalibrated R&B, creating a fresh template for the genre in the ’90s. From the jazzy, doo-wop-style refrain of “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” to the classic-rock swagger of “Free Your Mind,” the wide-ranging sounds and hippie-ish vibes of Funky Divas have a loose-limbed openness that transcends the boudoir jams of the era’s contemporary soul scene.
