About
Though they’d just downsized to a trio, Deerhoof hardly sound shorthanded on their eighth full-length, <i>Friend Opportunity</i>. They focus on tightly wound pop, shoving as many unexpected approaches as possible into three-minute packages. Horn-laced "+81" pays homage to Bowie; "The Galaxist" thrives on the tension between gentle folk arpeggios and Greg Saunier's jazz-damaged drumming. Ever rebellious, Deerhoof break their own rules on "Look Away,” an 11-minute, multi-suite epic pitched halfway between The Beatles' melodic ambition and Pink Floyd's sprawl.
